Pink Ribbon candle light vigil on Wednesday

Joanne Ogo, acting program coordinator of the event, said the Pink Ribbon Candle Light Vigil and Parade will start at the Oleai Beach Pavilion, across from San Jose Church, to Hakubotan, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 29.

Students from different schools and members of the community are expected to participate in  the parade, Ogo said.

Each year, the parade is the first activity of the month-long commemoration of the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Ogo said incentives will be given to the school with the most number of participants in the parade.

The first prize is $300; the second prize, $200; and the third prize, $100.

Free t-shirts will be distributed to the first 50 registered participants.

This year’s theme is “Step Up Against Breast Cancer” in recognition of those who have cancer and are still fighting it, Ogo said.

“We will always fight to have a cancer-free Saipan,” she added.

Various government agencies participate in an exhibit on the day of the parade and there will be a free blood sugar and blood pressure screening provided to the public.

The exhibit will include food demonstration and lectures and distribution of brochures, said Esther Seman, community outreach worker of the Department of Public Health’s Breast and Cervical Screening Program.

The event will be held in cooperation with the Commonwealth Cancer Association, the CNMI Diabetes Prevention and Control Program, Northern Marianas College-Cooperative Research Extension and Education Service, the Ayuda Network Inc., and the Community Guidance Center.
