Some public and professional bodies in PNG are calling for the government to invite regional countries to help address law and order problems.
But Dr. Alphonse Gelu of the PNG National Research Institute said the PNG people would not accept a RAMSI-style intervention.
RAMSI is the Australian-led Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands, which was created in 2003 in response to a request for international aid by the governor-general of the Solomon Islands.
According to Gelu, PNG is stable and has never faced a constitutional crisis.
Gelu told Radio Australia’s Pacific Beat program that means there’s no need for foreign assistance.
“The constitution has remained paramount,” he said. “The judiciary of the country has been intact. And for any suggestion that a similar arrangement that would allow other countries to come in to assist Papua New Guinea to maintain its law and order problem, I don’t think is a practical idea at this stage.”
