PNG looks to taro as export winner

PORT MORESBY (Papua New Guinea Post-Courier/PINA) — Papua New Guinea taro can find a niche market in Australia, National Agriculture Research Institute Director Valentine Kambori said.

Kambori said at present taro exports to Sydney alone were about 20 tons per week.

While there is little commercial cultivation in Papua New Guinea, other Pacific countries are commercially exporting their taro to Australia, New Zealand and North America, he said.

Initial moves to strengthen Papua New Guinea exports have been made with the establishment of a taro market office in Lae, he added.

“Taro is not only for eating but should be grown and sold in order to earn money,” Kambori said.
