Sgt. Paul T. Ogumoro, DPS traffic section officer-in-charge, led the education and information team to the school.
He said the children were “very attentive” and eager to learn.
He believes that through the school children, their highway safety program will be relayed effectively to the adults at home.
Ogumoro said the students told him that they observe the seat-belt law.
The children also learned when to cross the road safely.
The mission of the traffic section is to reduce property damage, injuries, and deaths caused by traffic crashes in the commonwealth, Ogumoro said.
DPS, he added, also conducts preventative patrols, proactive enforcement, community education, analysis of traffic crash data, investigation of traffic crashes, and active problem solving.
Other DPS personnel who joined Ogumoro at the school were PO2 Flor Estabillo, PO1 Melinda Villanueva and PO1 Raquel K. Ogumoro.
The school invited different government agencies to discuss health and wellness issues.
The Department of Public Health’s Maria Raubeliman talked about preventing diabetes; Benjamin Kennedy of the Red Cross discussed responding to emergencies; while Joe Fitial of the Emergency Management Office briefed students about how the agency will deal with typhoons, earthquakes or tsunamis.
The other guest speakers included Ernest Cruz, Jay Tilipao and Alejandro King of the Emergency Medical Services;, Joe Mettao of the Division of Sports and Recreation; Ricky Itibus of the Community Guidance Center; John Moreno, Delma Dela Cruz and Allim Ogumoro of the HIV/AIDS office; and Greg Borja and Tom Thornburg of the Northern Marianas Protection & Advocacy Systems Inc.
Northern Marianas College’s Cooperative Research Extension and Education Service also sent a representative.
Hilda Rios, SAES science fair and health and wellness committee chairwoman, said students, staff and parents were very excited to learn new things from various agencies.
“They learned what it meant to stay healthy and safe in our small but challenging community. We would like to thank all the community agencies and businesses that helped make this event successful and meaningful. We would also like to thank all the SAES staff members that helped make this day possible,” Rios said.
