PSS-Child Nutrition Program suspends distribution of school meals

“Until it is safe to give the food, we will suspend the distribution of meals,” Ada said after a meeting with school administrative officers on Monday afternoon.

He said the school principals and vice principals want the meal distribution suspended until they can come up with safety procedures.

“Distributing food at designated schools sites may gather people in large numbers and expose the students to health risks,” Ada said.

“We decided to avoid that possibility. We are treating the situation [the Covid-19 threat] as if it is already here. Everybody should be on lockdown at home and not going out to get their food,” he added.

On Tuesday, the Board of Education will have a special meeting to discuss contingency plans for Covid-19.

Ada expressed confidence that the federal grantors will understand PSS’ decision to temporarily suspend the distribution of school meals.

“I am confident that the federal programs will loosen up their policies considering the situation that we are in,” he added.
