PSS program launches ‘Operation CNMI Trooper’

Called “Operation CNMI Trooper,” the campaign is open to members of the community who wish to provide support to local soldiers now in Iraq.

There will be an organizational meeting on Aug. 12 at the Army Reserve Center starting at 1:30 p.m.

PSS Troops to Teachers Program director Geri Willis and assistant director Fred Camacho said the project aims to provide support for the deployed soldiers in the form of care packages, letters, newspapers and any other items from the CNMI “that will help to alleviate some of the stress of deployment.”

Willis said care packages will consist mostly of canned foods, personal hygiene products, newsletters, newspapers, and other items that are unique to the islands.

These items will be sent on a regular basis.

“In addition,” she said, “the Troops-To-Teachers Program will have its members work with their master teachers and their classes to write letters of support to the soldiers ensuring that each soldier gets one.”

This may initiate correspondence between the soldiers and students that will be on-going throughout the deployment, she added.

“All of us need to do our part to support the heroes of the CNMI as they go out to protect our freedom,” Willis said. “The size and content of the packages we send is irrelevant — the most important thing is that our soldiers know that they are never far from our thoughts and prayers.”
