PSS still waiting for 1st quarter allotment

PSS was supposed to get the operational budget for schools amounting to $591,000 on Oct. 1, the beginning of the new fiscal year.

The amount will pay for the schools’ drinking water, fuel for school buses, toiletries and security services.

The first quarter covers October to December 2008.

On Friday, vendors were seeking payments from PSS, which wasn’t able to tell them when they could be paid.

A PSS official, who declined to be identified, said they have made several follow-up calls to the Department of Finance.

Finance transmitted funding, but only for the school system’s personnel cost.

BOE Vice Chairman Herman T. Guerrero, in a separate interview on Friday, said PSS was also waiting for the FY 2008 $2 million Compact-Impact money from the administration.

He said the amount will be used to pay for the schools’ utilities which remain an unbudgeted item.

“We need that $2 million … for our schools,” Guerrero said, adding that a letter from PSS was already sent to Finance to inquire about the transmittal.
