PSS: Student population won’t go up

She said some students will be leaving public schools to return to their parents’ home countries or to pursue their education elsewhere in the U.S. mainland.

But she said this won’t affect much the current student population of more than 10,000 in different public schools.

Public School System statistics showed a 3 percent decrease on student enrollment rate for school-year 2007-2008.

In terms of ethnicity, Chamorro students topped the list this school-year at 4,078.

Filipino students ranked the second highest in terms of population at 3,168.

Sablan said the PSS has yet to determine how many students from private schools will transfer to  public school.

Enrollment in the kindergarten, however, went up very quickly.

“The kindergarten filled up very quickly this year,” she said.

By August, she added, PSS would determine exactly how many students would be returning to public schools.

Based on their data, Garapan Elementary School posted the highest enrollment in the elementary level with 791 students.

Marianas High School posted the highest enrollment rate at 1,220 students among public secondary schools.
