PSS will receive $1.3 million in Federal Transit Administration grant for the purchase of seven new school buses.
The grant money, Thornburgh said, will also be used for the renovation of the bus facility, repair and preventive maintenance as well as for the call-a-ride program.
“We are taking all the old buses that are out of service,” he said.
Of the seven new school buses, Tinian and Rota will get one each while Saipan will have five, he said.
The new buses will prevent a shortage when the old buses are being repaired, he added.
“The new buses will meet the needs of PSS,” he said.
Each of the 66-seat school bus will cost about $100,000 excluding the shipment from the states to Saipan.
Thornburgh said of the $1.3 million grant PSS will get, about $900,000 will be allocated to purchase new school buses.
Once the buses arrive, Rota and Tinian will have a total of two each while Saipan will have 21.
