PSS to get over $5M in grants

THE Public School System may get over $5 million in federal grants through a total consolidated package under the No Child Left Behind Act.

In a report submitted to the Board of Education and Education Commissioner Rita H. Inos, Public School System federal programs officer William P. Matson said the agency can avail of a package “that will most likely exceed $5 million” by focusing only on a single grant title, Title VI subpart B – rural and low income schools.

“This title appears to limit administrative costs while focusing funds almost exclusively for the academic needs of PSS students. The focus may easily result in hundreds of thousands of existing dollars being applied to PSS needs,” he said.

In the past, he said PSS used to apply for consolidated grants using as many as four different titles.

Matson said his office spent many hours reviewing the new law to ensure that PSS gets the best funding package.

Title VI combines the activities of Titles 1 (including both Reading First and Early Reading First), II (technology), III (English language instruction) and IV (safe and drug-free) as well as teacher recruitment/retention, teacher professional development and parental involvement.
