The personnel action for the 29 are already being processed by the human resource office of PSS.
PSS allows its principals to recommend the hiring, replacement or non-renewal of school personnel.
Of the 29 new teachers, eight are new graduates of Northern Marianas College.
Twelve graduated from NMC’s elementary education program in the last semester.
Five of the 29 new teachers applied off-island and were accepted by principals for hiring.
Of the school system’s 515 classroom teachers, 365 are considered highly qualified —they have bachelor’s degrees, valid teaching certificates and have passed the Praxis tests.
Given a two-year teaching contract, each highly qualified teacher get an annual salary based on their qualifications and credentials, ranging from $28,000 to $47,000.
According to PSS, 34 teachers have resigned this year, and the number is expected to increase as most of the teaching contracts will expire on July 31.
Among the schools that need replacements for their resigned teachers are Kagman High School, which needs six; William S. Reyes, five; Hopwood, five; Tinian High School, three; Saipan Southern High, two; Dandan, Gregorio T. Camacho, Kagman Elementary, Marianas High School, Rota High, San Vicente and Oleai, one each.
Every year, PSS loses an average of 80 employees who either retire or resign.
