‘Public safety is a shared responsibility’

GOVERNOR Arnold I. Palacios and Lt. Gov. David M. Apatang signed a proclamation designating May as Public Safety Awareness Month at the Visitor Center theater of American Memorial Park on Tuesday.

“As we honor your commitment, your dedication and integrity in keeping our community safe, as well as remembering those who have gone before us and who had served our community honorably … on behalf of the lt. governor and I and the leadership of this community, we thank you,” Palacios addressed law enforcers.

“Thank you for keeping us safe. Thank you for your dedication and to all the families, the spouses and children of our law enforcement, thank you,” he added.

Apatang said, “I want to say thank you, too …. Your job is very hard. That’s like in the military — you work on the field 24/7, and you guys are doing the same thing to protect our community. I hear and see you guys, and sometimes I feel sorry for you guys. I feel sorry for the family waiting for you at home. That’s the job that we have to do to protect our people, our community. We thank you for that. Even the staffers at the office are working very hard to support you guys on the field. Thank you for the hard work.”

According to Department of Public Safety Commissioner Anthony I. Macaranas, public safety is a shared responsibility.

“Today we come together to recognize the strength, commitment, and dedication of public safety professionals, those who serve each day to protect our people and bring peace to our communities,” Macaranas said.

“Their courage and professionalism are the foundation of the safety and stability we enjoy. Public Safety Awareness Month is not only to honor those individuals but also to remind our entire community that public safety is a shared effort, one that requires cooperation, vigilance and support from all of us,” he said.

“Here in the CNMI, public safety is made through strong partnership across our government,” he added.

Macaranas noted that May 15 is National Peace Officer Memorial Day, which honors the law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

Also attending the proclamation signing ceremony were Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services Commissioner Juan Pua, Commonwealth Ports Authority Police Director Juan Dela Cruz, Department of Lands and Natural Resources Secretary Sylvan Igisomar, acting U.S. Customs and Border Protection Ports Director Noel Deleon Guerrero, Customs Director Jose Mafnas, Corrections Commissioner Anthony Torres, Commerce Secretary Remedio Mafnas, and other law enforcement officers.

In honor of fallen officers, a walk from American Memorial Park to the Carolinian Utt was held after the proclamation signing ceremony.
