THE Public School System yesterday launched a two-day islandwide search for additional teachers in anticipation of the increase in the number of students enrolling this coming school year.
Principals of various public schools from Saipan, Tinian and Rota spent the day interviewing applicants at Diamond Hotel.
PSS said it was anticipating more applicants to show up today. The last PSS job fair was held two years ago, attracting 82 applicants.
Oleai Elementary School Principal Evelyn Ooka says she needs two teachers for the upper grade level and one for the lower grade students.
Oleai has 425 students but its population is anticipated to increase this coming school year.
Ooka is looking for applicants who are compassionate and dedicated.
“I am looking for a person with experience working in a classroom setting. One who is compassionate and concerned for the students,” Ooka said.
She is also looking forward to recruit new graduates, especially those from Northern Marianas College. “I think it’s very important to give new teachers an opportunity to be able to practice their profession,” Ooka said.
William S. Reyes Elementary School Principal Paz C. Younis anticipates a 3 percent growth rate in their enrollment this coming school year.
Younis needs one more teacher for the 6th grade. She is looking for a person who is innovative, focused on students and a risk-taker.
San Vicente Elementary School Principal Janet Villagomez and Kagman Elementary School Principal Ignacia T. Demapan were also seen interviewing applicants.
Aside from NMC students who recently earned their degree in bachelor of science in elementary education, several workers from Bank of Saipan were also seen applying either as teachers or teacher aides.
Enrollment for the coming school year is anticipated to rise to over 11,000. There are 10,000 students in this school year.
PSS is looking for classroom teacher I for junior and high school level only. It is also recruiting classroom teachers II, III, IV and special education teachers for all areas.
The human resources office of PSS will evaluate the qualifications of the applicants. Files of applicants not hired will be kept for at least two years after the final date of employment.
