Public warned of new e-mail scams

KOROR (Palau Horizon) — Several recent e-mails sent to people in Palau have asked for assistance in transferring large sums of money.

One e-mail claims to be from “Lt. Col. Kabongo Lokomboh,” a former chief security officer for the late President Lauren Kabila of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Another e-mail claims to be from “Roy Adams,” a top government official who has a contract with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. Yet another claims to be from “Abdul Koroma,” son of “the late Chief Dantata Koroma” of Sierra Leone. The heading of the e-mails say “confidential business proposal,” “business” and “I need your urgent help.”

These are not legitimate, according to Palau’s Ministry of Justice. “Do not submit credit card numbers, bank account or other confidential information to anyone whom you do not know or trust. If you have already submitted bank account or credit card information to anyone whom you do not know or do not trust, close your account or cancel your credit card,” the ministry said.
