Rahall pledges to help NMI

“The challenges and opportunities inevitably defining the commonwealth’s future are undoubtedly and increasingly great in both scope and complexity. My colleagues in the United States Congress and I remain committed to working with you as you address these challenges and opportunities,” Rahall, D-W.V, wrote to Fitial on Monday, his inauguration day.

Under Fitial, the CNMI lost its control over immigration, which is now run by the federal government.

Rahall, whose committee has oversight jurisdiction over the CNMI and other insular areas, said Fitial’s inauguration ceremony “holds a very significant symbolism for a democratic society.”

“The inaugural ceremony, rich in tradition and meaning, commemorates the honor, privilege and public trust that are foundationally a part of the offices to which you have been elected to serve and that you affirm to uphold,” Rahall said.

He also noted his deep appreciation for the people of the CNMI’s warm reception to the congressional delegation that visited the islands last August upon the invitation of CNMI Congressman Gregorio C. Sablan.

“Having personally traveled to the commonwealth last year, I hold a renewed personal appreciation for the richness of your culture and heritage and the beauty of your islands. My best wishes to you and the people of the commonwealth as you commence your second term,” the U.S. lawmaker told Fitial.
