SAIPAN Mayor Ramon Blas “RB” Camacho got nostalgic on Thursday, citing the reasons he and the Liberation Day Committee decided to move the festivities from the Garapan Fishing Base to the Civic Center in Susupe.

Before leading the ribbon cutting ceremony to kick off the commemorative celebration, the mayor said he felt the need to explain the decision, as many people had asked him why the Liberation Day festivities were being held in Susupe.

These are the reasons, he said:

– We have a new road.

– We have sufficient parking lots: the parking areas of the Ada gym, the Guma’ Hustisia, and the multi-purpose center.

– It was in this area where our forefathers were liberated from a civilian camp 79 years ago.

Camacho said he wants everyone to take these Liberation festivities as “an opportunity to appreciate and celebrate our community and the many diverse backgrounds of those who call the CNMI home.”

Liberation Day, the mayor said, marks “the granting of freedom to our people to live in our own land and in the way of life we choose for ourselves. It also marks the beginning of a new chapter for our community. Let us celebrate the kickoff of the festivity and the spirit of goodwill with passion and remembrance.”
