Red Cross to host youth dance, ‘super CPR’ training and walkathon

Local chapter executive director John Hirsh said this is the second time they are hosting a youth dance for high school students and they decided to hold it for two nights.

“Last year, we held the first youth dance and it was very successful. We want to give a chance to all our high school students on island to join this time, and we are holding the event at the Club V at the Saipan Grand Hotel,” Hirsh said.

Youth dance tickets are $5 each, and the proceeds will go to fund the community programs of the NMI chapter. The youth dance nights begin at 6:30 p.m. and end at 10 p.m.

On March 5, Hirsh said  they are hosting a “super cardiopulmonary resuscitation,” or CPR,  training from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the multi-purpose center in Susupe.

The training fee is  $5 per person but only the first 80 to 100 participants can be accommodated.

Hirsh said the regular CPR training class fee costs $35.

The NMI chapter regularly holds CPR classes and other training sessions on Saipan, Tinian and Rota so that the islands will have more trained individuals who can respond to emergencies.

On April 9, the NMI chapter will celebrate its 25th year anniversary which will be highlighted with the annual walkathon.

“We have lots of exciting programs and activities for the 25th annual Red Cross Walkathon. We have lots of prizes to be given away, and as early as today, we are encouraging the community to join us,” Hirsh said.

They hope to surpass last year’s collection of $45,000.

The Coke-Subway-Foremost-Scoops Glimpses Group of Companies is again this year’s partner that will donate refreshments and financial support.

“We have more activities lined up for this month compared to the past years, and we are hoping for more community involvement and support,” he said.

According to Hirsh, they will also conduct disaster services preparedness, response training and outreach information booths at various community events throughout the month of March.
