American Memorial Park Ranger Nancy Kelchner said the students who registered when they distributed the fliers and forms back in May will have a week filled with activities geared toward saving and preserving the island’s reefs.
“The reef camp will help raise the educational level of the children and help them understand how important it is to save our dying reefs,” Kelchner said.
Today’s activities will start with a trip to Marine Beach in Kagman where the reef rangers will have a chance to snorkel and take underwater pictures.
Kelchner said Rainbow Printing offered to print the pictures and the children will showcase them during the wrap-up program on Friday.
Tomorrow, the reef rangers will head to Bird Island in Marpi where they will study the problems affecting the reefs.
On Wednesday and Thursday, the rangers will be at Laolao Beach to plant grass and help curb soil erosion.
On Friday, the reef rangers will plant mangrove trees around American Memorial Park starting at 9 a.m. and they will be given t-shirts and certificates afterward.
