Retired archbishop tipped to be Solomons governor general

The five years tenure in office of current Governor General Sir Nathaniel Waena ends on July 7 although he can seek re-election for one last term.

The election of governor general will take place around two months time in June.

The government camp settled for Sir Ellison because of his attributes and achievements both locally and internationally.

Sir Ellison last year before bowing out of leadership after 14-years as head of the country’s biggest church denomination was awarded with Vanuatu’s highest award, the Badge of Honor.

The Fiji-based Pacific Theological College  Governing Council also gave him the prestigious award of honorary doctorate for his role as the chairman of the PTC board of governors for the last 15 years.

On top of that he was awarded one of Anglican Communion’s highest award, the Cross of St. Augustine, by the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams in London, England for conspicuous service he rendered to the church.

Sir Ellison received his knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in Oct. 2000.

He has served in various boards and councils in the Anglican Communion, government, and private sector during his tenure as a leader within the church.

But according to commentators, his accolade of achievements has come under disrepute when he questioned the election of his successor and blasted the Council of Bishops of playing “dirty politics” on him.
