THE Rota Legislative Delegation on Tuesday adopted Senate Commemorative Resolution 23-4 honoring former Senate President Julian S. Calvo.
He passed away on May 14, 2024 at the age of 84.
The resolution’s author, Sen. Paul A. Manglona, who is in Washington state for his wife’s medical check-up, was able to attend Calvo’s funeral at the Fir Lane Memorial in Spanaway, Washington.
All three Rota delegation members present voted to approve S.C.R. 23-4. Sen. Paul A. Manglona was excused.
Calvo was the Senate president in the 5th Legislature.
According to the resolution, he had contributed to the community for many years dating back to the Trust Territory time when he worked as a teacher from 1962 to 1969; and as an economic development technician from 1972 to 1975.
In addition, Calvo had a longstanding and notable political career as a senator elected from the First Senatorial District of Rota and serving in the 1st through the 5th Legislatures from 1977 to 1988. He was elected as the Senate floor leader in the 3rd Legislature, and became the Senate president in the 5th Legislature.
He continued to serve the public when he worked as a recovery coordinator for the CNMI Government Disaster Control Office Rota Division in January 1988.
He was also a grant coordinating officer for the CNMI Government Individual and Family Grant Rota Division from Jan. 24, 1988 to March 31, 1988; a deputy senior land commissioner for the Rota Office of Land Commission from 1991 to 1993; an acting resident department head for the Rota Health Center in 1995; a health consultant for the Rota Mayor’s Office from 1995 to 1996; and a resident department head for Public Health Services from 2006 to 2010.
“Throughout his illustrious career path in the health field, Calvo held a vision with his wife to build a chapel at the Rota Health Center where individuals’ spiritual needs can be aided and would serve as a solemn place to focus on spiritual strength and encouragement,” the resolution stated.
This chapel has been named the “Julian S. Calvo Divine Mercy Chapel” by Rota Local Law 22-13 to honor Calvo and all his contributions to the people.
