Rota lawmakers on trade mission to Guam

Senate Vice President Felix T. Mendiola, Covenant-Rota, said after their trade mission, they will hold a leadership meeting on Rota.

On Guam, Mendiola said they will meet with U.S. Department of Agriculture officials to seek support for Rota’s agricultural program.

“We’re going to be pro-active and prepare to meet the demand for agricultural commodities,” the senator said.

The planned transfer of  U.S. Marines from Okinawa, Japan to Guam is expected to create more business opportunities in all of the Marianas.

Rota is now opening its door to Guam, Mendiola said, “and we will further strengthen our good partnership with airline companies that have direct Guam-Rota flights.”

The Rota delegation, he added, will also revisit the $400,000 master plan prepared by Tenorio & Associates Inc., a Guam-based company that provides development and design services.

Mendiola said the master plan is necessary to avoid any dislocation of prime businesses and allow for the accommodation of other establishment in the right and appropriate areas.

In its Natural Resource Conservation Plan for Rota, Tenorio & Associates stated that “tourism is currently the second largest employer on Rota and Rota’s leadership has adopted steps to strengthen that industry.”

It added, “Successful ecotourism demands natural landscapes, clean coastal waters and beaches, and an appreciation of native wildlife and local culture. Such an industry also maintains native ecosystems and cultural traditions which will benefit future generations of Rotanese.”
