Rota mayor’s son in robbery case waives speedy trial

U.S. District Court for the NMI Presiding Judge Alex R. Munson granted Inos’ motion to waive speedy trial in a hearing yesterday afternoon and moved the jury trial to commence on April 27, 2009.

The federal court originally set the jury trial for Inos for Feb. 17, 2009.

Munson ordered that all motions should be filed not later than one week before the trial. The court granted the waiver for speedy trial after finding that “the ends of justice served by allowing the defense further time to review the evidence in preparation for trial outweighs any other interests the public or the defendant may have in a speedy trial.”

Inos, represented by his court-appointed lawyer Robert T. Torres signed the waiver of speedy trial. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric O’Malley represented the federal government.

The defendant entered a not guilty plea to the charges against him during his arraignment.  Munson denied bail without prejudice.

Inos was indicted for one count of Hobbs Act Robbery and one count of using a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence.

According to the indictment, the defendant committed robbery at Rota Poker, in Songsong on Rota on Aug. 4, 2008.

Police Officer George A. Barcinas of the Department of Public Safety-Rota Criminal Investigation Section stated in his affidavit that Rota Poker asked for assistance at around 4:14 a.m. on Aug. 4, reporting that a gun-totting suspect wearing a camouflaged outfit robbed them.

The defendant was arrested after police authorities viewed the security camera of Rota Poker and after gathering information that the suspect ran toward the property of the mayor of Rota.

Police authorities were able to recover the rifle the defendant used to rob the poker arcade as well as the plastic bag containing the money stolen from the establishment.
