Rota mayor’s son pleads not guilty to robbery charges, jury trial set for Feb. 2009

During arraignment on Friday before U.S. District Court for the NMI Presiding Judge Alex R. Munson, the defendant waived reading of the indictment and pled not guilty to the charges against him.

Munson ordered that all pre-trial motions should be filed by Jan. 5, 2009. He also denied bail without prejudice.

The federal government, represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney James Benedetto, moved that the defendant remain in custody without bail after playing a video of the actual robbery.

Inos was represented by attorney Robert Torres after the court reviewed the financial affidavit and stated that the defendant did qualify for a court-appointed counsel.

The defense moved for Inos’ release to a third party custodian on property bond and other conditions, but the government again argued for no bail. The defendant was remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshal Service.

The defendant was indicted for one count of Hobbs Act Robbery and one count for use of firearm in the commission of a crime of violence.

The indictment stated that the defendant committed robbery at Rota Poker in Songsong  on Rota on Aug. 4, 2008.

In an affidavit, George A. Barcinas of the Department of Public Safety-Rota Criminal Investigation Section said Rota Poker asked for assistance at around 4:14 a.m. on Aug. 4.

Police learned that the poker arcade was robbed by a gun-totting suspect who was wearing a camouflaged outfit.

The defendant was arrested after responding police viewed the security camera of Rota Poker and after getting information that the suspect ran toward the property of the mayor of Rota.

The defendant was with another man inside a parked car. Police said Inos showed a green plastic bag containing the money he took and told the police that his son was in critical condition on Guam.

Inos told the police that the rifle he used to rob the poker house was already hidden by his companions. It was later recovered on top of the roof of the barracks.
