Rota mulls windmill energy project

Hocog, Ind.-Rota, said the delegation and the island’s municipal leaders are studying the contract drafted by GCE Corp.

He said under the proposed contract, GCE will pay for the installation of at least nine windmills in certain areas on Rota.

“Not a single penny will be spent by the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. and Rota for the construction of the windmills,” Hocog said.

Each windmill has a rated capacity of one megawatt and costs $1 million, he added.

“We need to have at least nine windmills to provide power on Rota,” the lawmaker said.

The power firm is proposing a 20-year contract, Hocog said, and Rota residents will pay 19 cents per kilowatt hour compared to CUC’s current residential rate of 38.7 cents/kwh, and between 47 and 60  cents/kwh for non-residential customers.

Once a contract has been signed, GCE will begin the construction of the windmills in September this year, Hocog said.

“The governor is elated,” Hocog said, adding that even CUC Executive Director Antonio S. Muna supports the alternative energy proposal.
