Rota to hold public hearing on conservation law

Calvo told Variety yesterday he will conduct a public hearing to allow residents to present their views regarding the proposal to urge the CNMI Division of Fish and Wildlife to “revisit” the conservation law.

“The conservation law is not working and is affecting the economic condition of the people,” he said.

Calvo wants residents can “profoundly express their sentiments.”

Rep. Victor B. Hocog, the Rota legislative delegation chairman, agreed with Calvo.

He said the Division of Fish and Wildlife should “deregulate” some policies that are “already affecting the livelihood of the residents.”

Hocog is particularly  concerned about the fishing regulations.

While there are areas reserved as marine sanctuaries, Calvo said “moderate fishing” should not be prohibited to allow residents to “continue their livelihood.”

Hocog and Calvo said they want to address the economic needs of Rota residents.

Calvo suggested designating areas for deer hunting only.

This will allow the deployment of more wildlife guards to   conservation areas, he added.
