Sablan hosts Trieste commemoration in DC

Among the sponsors for the events, which included a reception on Capitol Hill, press briefings at the National Press Club and the U.S. Navy Yard, where the Trieste is preserved, a dinner at the National Geographic Society, and a reception at the Sant Ocean Hall of the Natural History Museum, were the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Rolex, the National Science Foundation, the Smithsonian Institution, and National Geographic.

Sablan presented Walsh with House Resolution 1027, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Trieste dive on Jan. 23, 1960.

Sablan authored the resolution, which passed the House on March 19.

The presentation took place during a reception for Walsh at the House Natural Resources Committee rooms.

“Avatar” director James Cameron joined the many notables at a reception at the Smithsonian Institution’s Natural History Museum commemorating the 50th anniversary of the dive of the bathyscaphe Trieste into the deepest location in the world’s oceans.

Also on hand were renowned ocean scientist Dr. Sylvie Earle and Dr. Jane Lubchenco, administrator of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, who presented Walsh with the NOAA Administrator’s Award, the agency’s highest honor.

Walsh was also awarded the National Geographic Society’s premier honor, the Hubbard Medal, only the 35th recipient since the first medal was awarded over a century ago.
