She defeated Vicky Jean Castro to secure the third Youth Congress seat of Northern Marianas College.
Legislative Bureau Deputy Director Glenna S.P. Reyes yesterday said NMC President Carmen Fernandez and House Floor Leader Joseph N. Camacho, R-Saipan, have certified the special election results.
Sablan got 17 votes while Castro garnered 7.
There were 45 registered voters at the college but only 28 cast their ballots on Sept. 15. Sablan and Castro received the same number of votes.
Last week, the names of the 22 other winning candidates were announced.
Reyes said it is their hope that the next Youth Congress speaker will seriously consider the organization’s participation in the various government board and commissions.
Public Law 12-43, as amended by P.L. 13-55, provides the Youth Congress with an opportunity to be non-voting honorary members on each commonwealth board and commission with the exception of those whose membership are provided for in the Constitution.
“Invaluable knowledge can be obtained through exposure and participation in the different activities and meetings held by each board and commission,” Reyes said. “The Youth Congress should soar beyond the workings of the legislative process and learn other government functions.”
Reyes also wants to see the 11th Youth Congress taking an active role in educating the CNMI youth about the Youth Congress program.
The new members of the Youth Congress will be sworn in on Oct. 18 in the House chamber on Capital Hill.
