Saipan has 16 new water wells

Also included in the contracts are the enclosure of electrical controls at those well sites, she added.

The project will address over 70 percent of the total number of production wells and chlorination stations that comprise the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s public water system, she said.

Delafield told Variety that the enclosure will protect the electrical panel of the wells from typhoon and the wind.

Last year, about 69 enclosures with a total cost of $993,009 were completed and 30 more are being constructed this year.

She said the 30 enclosures constructed at different well sites on island are funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency for $493,000.

According to Delafield, the task force also financed hydrological studies on the water system to identify potential locations for new water drilling sites.

The task force likewise tested  water supplies, equipment and tank integrity.

Delafield said the task force is working on two construction projects — the new waterlines and a reservoir in the Rapago area.

Two other projects are in the design phase — water line replacement in Garapan and a tank construction on Tinian.

Moreover, the task force is  pursuing funding for a new Puerto Rico tank as well as the leak detection and repair projects in Chalan Laulau and Lower Base.
