Saipan mayor’s office still trying to get surplus military equipment

Hofschneider, the mayor’s adviser, said they will comply with the terms required as suggested by Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan.

Early this year, Mayor Donald G. Flores sought Sablan’s assistance in establishing a connection with the appropriate DOD personnel.

Flores said his office is seeking first priority consideration in any disposal of military equipment that may occur from the closure of the U.S. military installation in Okinawa, Japan.

“The mayor is not dismissing the plan — we want to pursue it,” Hofschneider said.

He said the mayor may also  ask Gov. Benigno R. Fitial to help establish a contact in Okinawa.

The support from central government, Hofschneider added, is very important.

The mayor is hoping to acquire surplus machinery, heavy equipment and other available tools from the military because of the state of the island’s financial condition.

Flores said he wants to find ways to reduce the financial burden of the local government.

Currently, the mayor’s office is operating old heavy equipment.
