Saipan’s Korean community honors fallen compatriots

SAIPAN’S Korean community members and visitors from South Korea on Monday honored their compatriots who perished in the Marianas during World War II.

The ceremony was held at the Korean Peace Memorial in Marpi.

The theme of this year’s memorial ceremony was “Co-existence, Echo of History.”

The guest speaker was Saipan Mayor Ramon Blas “RB” Camacho, the only CNMI official who showed up for the event, which was jointly organized by the Korean Cultural Center Saipan, the Saipan Tourist Bureau, the Saipan Dance Research Institute and the World Local Culture Arts Center.

The event was sponsored by the Memorial Service Association for the Deceased Compatriots Overseas.

Camacho said Saipan is no longer just for Chamorros and Refaluwasch, adding that the island is a diverse community that includes the Korean community. He asked Korean community members to join him in promoting a safe community, safe villages and a clean island.

The group will also hold a similar memorial service on Tinian at 10 a.m. today, May 13, 2025.
