Saipan scholarship program gets 500-900 applicants every semester

The program provides supplementary financial assistance to qualified residents of Saipan pursuing post-secondary education here or abroad.

The SHEFA Chronicle, in its maiden publication in July, reported that over 300 scholars have enrolled in courses offering associate of arts, bachelors, masters or doctor of jurisprudence degrees.

The bulk of the graduates are employed at different CNMI government institutions or federal offices, SHEFA stated.

It added that some graduates have opted to serve in the private sector on Saipan while others have enlisted in the U.S. armed forces and continued their graduate education at home and abroad.

“A sizeable number of graduates, chose the path of remaining abroad for work made possible by the forbearance law passed by the Legislature last year,” SHEFA said.

The program was created by the 13th Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation and then-Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela.

In its quarterly newsletter, SHEFA recognized two  scholars on Saipan; Christopher Attao Conception and Erin C. Camacho.

Conception is presently the manager for Northwest Airlines at the Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International Airport while Camacho works as a dietician for the Commonwealth Health Center.

SHEFA also recognized Elizabeth Emma Cabrera Itibus who is a fourth-year undergraduate at Hawaii Pacific University majoring in pre-medicine with concentration in biology.
