Salvation Army urges community to join 5k run, donate canned goods

Salvation Army ministry leader Wayne Gillespie said the event requires no cash entry fee.

“We would just accept canned goods or non-perishable items per person as your entry fee to help feed the local community,” Gillespie told the recent Saipan Rotary Club meeting at the Hyatt.

The 5k run will start at the Salvation Army headquarters across from Hopwood at 7 a.m. tomorrow. Participants will head south along Beach Road past the Pacific Islands Club and head back.

Raffle prizes will be available for available from sponsors and all finishers will receive official race certificates.

Gillespie said  runners and walkers of all skill levels are welcome to join.

The Salvation Army started a soup kitchen last month to provide hot meals to individuals and families in need of food.

Since it opened, the soup kitchen has served an increasing number of clients. The soup kitchen, which opens every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., welcomes anyone who is hungry.

About 50 clients can be accommodated at a time in the soup kitchen located on the second floor of the building.

As they rely mainly on donations, Gillespie said they welcome any donation from the community especially canned goods and other non-perishable food items.

To join tomorrow’s event, be at the Salvation Army headquarters by 7 a.m. To donate or to get more information, email [email protected].
