San Antonio school embraces Cultural Week

The event started  on Monday with the students painting their national flags of origin on their faces.

Noland Villagomez, who helped coordinate the weeklong event with Chamorro and Carolinian Heritage teacher Virginia Richards, said  the theme for Tuesday is to wear a lei or a mwar.

In addition to the theme, they had local musician Parker singing for the children.

The songs were in various local languages.

“The children are very excited about these events. The participation of our students is very good and important as they embrace their cultural heritage,” Villagomez said.

“We wish to embrace and celebrate all cultures represented at San Antonio Elementary School by recognizing the wonderfully rich and diverse ethnic diversity represented by our students, staff and parents,” said principal Martin Dalsaso in an interview.

“The kids aren’t graded on their participation but we want to celebrate culture. We would like parents to participate but it’s all optional because we would not like to burden the parents, especially during tough times like these,” he added.

The schedule of events/activities for the Cultural Week is as follows:

• Monday, 10-18 – face painting of national flag of origin.

•  Tuesday, 10-19 – Wear a lei or mwar and music presentation by Parker from 7:40 a.m. to 8:40 a.m.

• Wednesday, 10-20  – Greetings in your own language of origin

• Thursday, 10-21 – Food presentation, share recipes or a dish from your culture or ethnic origin

•  Friday, 10-22 – Dress up in cultural attire of your ethnic/cultural origin
