San Antonio school marks Thanksgiving with song, dance and donations

Yesterday, the Home of the Octopus celebrated Thanksgiving with musical numbers performed by the students.

Rita Carreon, a kindergarten teacher, said they started preparing for the program on Thursday last week.

“We only had three days to prepare and they’re only kinder so I don’t expect them to be perfect but at least to have fun,” Carreon told Variety.

Included in the program was the presentation of canned goods collected throughout November  to Karidat, a charitable organization.

A total of nine boxes were filled with canned goods and cup noodles.

Karidat’s representatives were present to accept the donations.

The kindergarten to second grade students performed a musical number while the fourth graders performed a comedy bit. The fifth and sixth graders sang “Count on Me” by Bruno Mars.

During the celebration, the winners of the Thanksgiving theme and essay contests were announced:

Theme contest:

• Destiny Camacho, 1st grade

Essay contest:

• 1st place – Cheyenne Paner, 5th grade

• 2nd place – Shianalyn Lizama, 4th grade

• 3rd place – Christian Corilla, 5th grade

Martin Delsaso, SAES principal, said in his closing remarks: “I’ve never been in a school where they had a Thanksgiving program and I think it’s awesome. I am overwhelmed by the giving spirit that I’ve witnessed not only on Thanksgiving but since the day I stepped on campus.”
