San Roque assault suspect granted bail, awaits hearings

BRANDON Russell Camacho, viral video assault suspect, has been released from Corrections custody after posting 10% of his $15,000 cash bail, or $1,500.

Camacho, 40, appeared in custody before Superior Court Judge Lillian A. Tenorio for a bail hearing Monday morning.

As part of his conditional release, Judge Tenorio imposed a curfew from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

A U.S. Army veteran, Camacho was represented by attorney Charity Hodson, while Assistant Attorney General Frances Demapan appeared for the government.

Camacho was ordered to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 15 at 10 a.m. and an arraignment on Aug. 25 at 9 a.m.

Camacho, who is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery, surrendered to the Department of Public Safety after an arrest warrant was issued against him on Aug. 8.

DPS had been investigating an assault incident that went viral and occurred Wednesday at Welcome Market in San Roque.

A video of the incident shows a man in a green shirt and dark hat striking a shirtless man with a bat.

DPS identified the man in the green shirt and dark hat as Camacho.

According to DPS, the shirtless individual encountered his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend inside the store. He was then confronted by the suspect at the entrance and struck with the bat.

The victim told investigators he was at the store when he met his ex-girlfriend, who introduced him to Camacho, before they went their separate ways.

While making his purchase, the victim said, Camacho returned to the store and demanded an apology. The victim said he was unsure why, as he had not said anything.

Investigators said the two men went outside, where the altercation continued. Camacho continued to demand an apology while holding a bat. When the victim did not apologize, Camacho pushed him with the bat multiple times before striking him in the head, shoulder, and arm. The victim tried to defend himself from the attack.

Investigators observed that during the interview, the victim had difficulty opening his hand, and that his entire left arm and the area behind his ear to his head were swollen.

The victim said he was in severe pain but did not want to go to the hospital because he would have to pay and did not have the money.
