San Vicente youth volunteers revive park

Roy Ada, who grew up in the area, said it hurts him every time he drives along and see his childhood playground looking so bad.

“This is where I and my friends used to play as kids before,” Ada said as he looked at the park’s overgrown grass, graffiti and vandalized fence.

He remembered an older neighbor who told him many years ago to take care of the park.

Last week, Ada asked some of his friends to help him revive the park which was named after Prudencio M. Cabrera whose name also vanished from the memorial erected years ago in his honor.

Ada and his friends distributed flyers asking their other neighbors and businesses for support.

Rep. Ralph DLG. Torres and his brothers Vic and Jack were among those who supported Ada’s initiative.

They joined the youth volunteers clean up the park and fix the basketball court.

Frank Cabrera, who runs 670 Rock Steady, also provided assistance.

The other businesses that helped were Asin and Tudela Stores.

Representative Torres, R-Saipan, said the most important thing about the cleanup is the sense of community and responsibility among the residents of San Vicente.

He said the project was discussed just last week and he was amazed how the volunteers acted quickly.

Ada said they will also fix the tennis court, the memorial hall and the playground facility.
