Saipan Republican Rosemond B. Santos said illegal taxicabs not only deprive the cash-strapped government of much needed taxes but also pose danger to passengers, particularly tourists.
“Not only do they create a potential danger to consumers, these unregulated taxicabs are left unmonitored. Thus, the CNMI may be losing out on potential tax revenues from companies that are not reporting their income. Additionally, illegal taxicabs are taking business away from the legitimately established taxicab companies,” House Bill 16-244 stated.
Violators of the yellow paint policy on taxis will be fined $500 for first offense; $1,000 for second offense; and $1,500 for third offense and revocation of license.
The bill remains pending in the House of Representatives.
