Senate panel re-schedules public hearing on CUC legislation

THE Senate Committee on Public Utilities, Transportation and Communication has re-scheduled today’s public hearing to Thursday and Friday this week.

Sen. Diego M. Songao, Covenant-Rota and committee chairman, said four key measures will be tackled during the two-day public hearing. The bills are “vital” to the welfare of the commonwealth residents, he said.

These proposed laws are:

• Senate Bill 13-12, which is on the qualifications of the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s board members.

• S.B. 13-14, which is on the water rates for local farmers and ranchers.

• S.B. 13-35 and S.B. 13-46, which would affect CUC’s utility service rates and regulations.

Earlier, Senate President Paul A. Manglona, R-Rota and author of S.B. 13-35 and S.B. 13-36, complained about the “excessive” CUC connections charges on Rota.

The public hearing on the bills will be held at Rota’s courthouse.

Songao has requested Attorney General Robert T. Torres to be present during the public hearing, along with acting CUC Executive Director Bernard Villagomez, members of CUC’s board of directors and the administrative heads of its water and power divisions.
