SHELL Marianas on Thursday raised its fuel prices by 10 cents, the second price hike this year after a series of rollbacks in 2023.

Shell’s gasoline price went up to $5.46 a gallon from $5.36 a gallon while the price of diesel rose to $5.83 a gallon from $5.73 a gallon.

Mobil Oil is expected to follow suit.

On Tinian, following the price hike last week, the price of regular gas price went up to $7.23 a gallon from $7.12 a gallon while the price of diesel went up to $7.57 a gallon from $7.52 a gallon. The fuel prices on Tinian are expected to increase anytime soon due to the latest price hike.

On Rota, following last week’s price hike, the cost of gas went up to $6.84 a gallon from $6.74 a gallon while the price of diesel went up to $10.07 a gallon from $10.02 a gallon. Rota is also expected to implement the latest fuel price hike.

Monica Daniel, who works in the private sector, said if she had known that the gas price would go up Thursday, she would have bought gas on Wednesday.

She said she can only afford to buy $50 worth of gas, which is not enough for two weeks. Now that gas prices have gone up again, her $50 will buy less gas, said Daniel, who drives almost every day to drop off and pick up her children to and from their schools. One of them, she said, attends Northern Marianas College.

According to Reuters, oil prices rose on Tuesday “as a higher global economic growth forecast and escalating tensions in the Middle East offset concerns around Chinese demand.”

Reuters said the “International Monetary Fund raised its forecast for global economic growth, upgrading the outlook for both the U.S. and China on faster-than-expected easing of inflation.”
