Shiko Gakuen to hold annual memorial rites

TWO visiting groups from Japan, including Shiko Gakuen, are scheduled to arrive beginning today for their weekend ceremonial activities on the island.

About 160 members of Shiko Gakuen will attend the 13th peace memorial ceremony which will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Banzai Cliff.

Every year, except last year, the group holds memorial services at Banzai Cliff. The group’s trip to Saipan was canceled last year following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Motoyuki Osawa, general manager of Jalpak International Micronesia said.

Shiko Gakuen, formed 16 years ago, built the Japanese monument at Banzai Cliff in 1987. Hisae Kawakami, president of Shiko Gakuen Missio, said they will continue to pray for peace and harmony throughout the world and to pray for the unfortunate victims of war.

Another group of Japanese visitors will arrive tomorrow to plant flame trees and donate money to the Marianas Visitors Authority.
