“The skate park is about 50 percent finished and we have hired the services of John Glaze, a skate park specialist from Indonesia, to oversee the construction until the project is finished,” Peterka said.
She said Glaze arrived on Saipan, Saturday, and will be at the jobsite everyday until the completion of the project.
“We want to be sure that the skate park is designed safely for skaters,” she said. “We expect the skate park to be finished around the second week of September and the grand opening will be set in the following week.”
Although the skate park has a smaller area compared to skating parks in other places, it will have a lot of features, Peterka said.
“The design is done by the skaters themselves,” she added. “Skate parks are not like basketball courts where there’s a standard size to be followed. The Saipan skate park is like a three-quarter bowl where one side tapers down to a defining ledge.”
The Rotary Club of Saipan conducted several fundraising activities, including its Las Vegas Night, for the construction of the skate park, which is adjacent to the Garapan Central Park roundhouse.
The Rotarians started raising funds for the project some years ago after seeing that local children were skating at the memorial park and roadways.
