A panel of three judges at the Uijeongbu District Court sentenced U.S. Army Pvt. Lloyd Daniel, 19, based on his admission of guilt, evidence and the testimony of the victims, Stars and Stripes reported.
Daniel, who was drunk at the time of the incident, was charged with attempted robbery and rape, robbery, injury resulting from attempted rape, and bodily injury resulting from robbery and larceny. The incident occurred on Feb. 26 inside the couple’s Camp Casey-area home.
The couple said Daniel, of the 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team, beat them with a piece of lumber and attempted to rape the elderly woman.
The victims — a 70-year-old Korean man and his wife — were hospitalized following the incident.
The woman had a broken nose while the man suffered facial fractures that required surgery, the Stars and Stripes reported.
Daniel was interviewed by the Christian Science Monitor last year about his desire to join the U.S. military.
In that article, Daniel was described as “a talkative senior with a taste for pizza and American slang.”
He told the Christian Science Monitor that like other aspiring young soldiers from Micronesia, he wants to see the world, get a steady paycheck, and pay for college. He also felt a sense of debt to America,
“The U.S. has been here helping out our island in many ways, so I feel that we, as Micronesians, must return the favor,” the Christian Science Monitor article quoted Daniel as saying.
The FSM is an independent island nation freely associated with the United States.
