Solomons opens border post

Solomon Islands Police And National Security Minister Samuel Manetoali joined acting Police Commissioner Peter Marshall to open the Kulitanai Bay police station in the Shortland Islands group at the border with the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.

The Solomon Islands government spent about $376,000 on the construction of the facility.

The police station accommodates police, immigration, customs and quarantine officers manning the PNG and SI border.

Manetoali said the opening of Kulitanai policing center was a big step forward for the SI, particularly regarding border security.

He said the facility would meet the country’s obligations in managing the border between PNG and the Solomon Islands.

The construction of new facility came after much discussion over the years about the policing of the border dividing Bougainville, Shortlands and Choiseul, and protecting the sovereignty of both countries. The Kulitanai center replaced the old Korovou police post.
