Some CIPs included in stimulus proposals

The Office of Insular Affair’s list of CIPs for fiscal year 2007 included some projects that the CNMI wants funded by the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, or the stimulus package.

These projects include  Saipan Power Plant 1 the repair for which received $4.6 million in federal CIP funds.

The CNMI is now asking additional power generation units for the power plant, costing over $36 million.

The CNMI economic stimulus team is also preparing to submit a proposal to replace the water treatment system of the same power plant which will cost $350,000.

The wastewater project proposal, which will cost over $2 million, was also among the CIPs already requested by the CNMI.

OIA’s CIP coordinator Keith Aughenbaugh said it is possible that some CIPs can seek stimulus funding.

He said the stimulus money can be used  for any possible CIP funding shortfalls.

Or, he added, the CIP funding could be used for other priority projects.
