Special assistant for military affairs, FHB manager, Corrections chief receive ESGR awards

SPECIAL Assistant to the Governor for Military Affairs Danny Aquino and First Hawaiian Bank-NMI Vice President and Branch Manager Vickie Izuka received the Seven Seals Award, while Department of Corrections Commissioner Anthony C. Torres received the Patriot Award from the Guam-CNMI Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve State Committee during “Lunch with the Boss” at Crowne Plaza Resort’s Hibiscus Hall on Wednesday.

They received their awards in the presence of Lt. Gov. David M. Apatang, Senate President Edith Deleon Guerrero, Speaker Edmund S. Villagomez, Rep. Vicente Camacho, Rep. Vincent S. Aldan, Rep. Manny Gregory T. Castro and Saipan Mayor Ramon Blas “RB” Camacho.

Also present were ESGR Guam-CNMI State Chair Cathy Gogue, Ombudsman Director Dave Sablan Jr., Area Chair Dr. Rita A. Sablan, Ombudsman Joann Aquino, Employer Outreach Coordinator Rose Igitol and volunteer Tanya David.

Coming from the Department of Defense, the Patriot Award was given to Torres for contributing to national security and protecting liberty and freedom by supporting employee participation in America’s National Guard and Reserve force.

Torres was nominated by a Corrections officer, U.S. Army Reservist Samlyn T. Atalig.

Aquino and Izuka were nominated by Guam-CNMI State Chair Gogue to receive the Seven Seals Award in recognition of their achievement, initiative and support in promoting ESGR’s mission.

Dave Sablan Jr. said Torres, Aquino and Izuka are very supportive of the servicemembers with the U.S. Army Reserve.

In her remarks, Gogue talked about ESGR, its history, its mission and its current leadership in the Marianas today.

ESGR serves the Guam Army National Guard, the U.S. Army Reserve, the U.S. Navy Reserve, the Guam Air National Guard, the U.S. Air Force Reserve and the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve.

Dave Sablan Jr., for his part, discussed the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act or USERRA of 1994 and provided examples of its application. USERRA is a federal law that establishes the rights and responsibilities of uniformed service members and their civilian employers.
