The project involved creating a Web site that allowed students, teachers and school librarian to work collaboratively using various Web 2.0 tools.
Students posted their chapter summaries through the Google Doc spreadsheet and shared the synthesis to everyone. Students were also introduced to Wallwisher.
Wallwisher is an online forum that host students to post and interact with other students’ comments in real time.
Finally, students had an opportunity to post their thoughts and comments on the Saipan Southern Readers Blog about their learning experience.
All of the online tools allowed the students to post their work anonymously.
Saipan Southern High School Library’s Facebook provides all the links for these collaborative tools and the project’s website. (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Saipan/Saipan-Southern-High-School-Library).
Jacinta Clemon, Paul Muira’s freshmen English classes and SSHS Book Club worked closely with the school librarian, Sudi Napalan.
“Surprisingly, there were great reactions from students about this whole project. Most of them had a pleasant experience reading the book and the movie field trip provided a lot of our visual learners an excellent representation of their reading,” Napalan said.
“Book movie tie-ins are becoming more popular and I think it’s a prime time for educators to catch the students interest especially these particular media tie-ins,” Napalan added.
The Last Song Knowledge Building Project is the highlight of this year’s School Library Month celebration. Special thanks to Mr. Garrison, Ms. Clemon, Mr. Muira, Tasi Tours and Hollywood Theater staff and management for their continued support to this project.
