SAIPAN Southern High School and Tinian High School cadets will represent the CNMI at the Golden Bear West Coast National Drill Meet in Torrance, California after each school topped their respective divisions in the CNMI Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps drill competition on Saturday, March 2 at Marianas High School.
SSHS was the winner in the overall category of the unarmed drill division while THS topped the overall category of the armed drill division.
According to SSHS senior Army instructor, retired Command Sgt. Maj. Richard Basa, whose students were in charge of coordinating the day’s events, the competition brought together over 120 JROTC cadets from Rota, Tinian, SSHS, Kagman High School and Marianas High School.
The competition judges were from the University of Guam’s ROTC program, the Guam Army National Guard, and the U.S. Army Reserve.
Basa said the judges assessed the competing schools in the following categories: unarmed and armed inspection, unarmed and armed platoon regulation, unarmed and armed color guard, and unarmed and armed exhibition.
In the unarmed inspection category, MHS finished first, with SSHS and THS finishing second and third. In the unarmed platoon regulation category, SSHS was first; THS, second; and KHS, third. In the unarmed color guard category, SSHS came in first, with second and third going to MHS and THS. In the unarmed exhibition category, SSHS came in first place, with second and third going to MHS and THS.
SSHS came in first in the armed inspection category, with second and third place going to THS and MHS. In the armed platoon regulation category, SSHS came in first place with second and third going to MHS and THS. In the armed color guard category, SSHS came in first with second and third going to MHS and THS. In the armed exhibition category, THS was first with second and third going to MHS and SSHS.
The Golden Bear West Coast National Drill Meet is set for April 27.

The recently concluded drill competition was held at the MHS campus on March 2. It brought together over 120 JROTC students from Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.
