Still no update on case of ex-garment worker mauled by cop

Jin Dong Wang, 44, who is now working as a barber, filed a complaint of assault and battery, and assault with a dangerous weapon.

DPS Commissioner Santiago F. Tudela earlier confirmed that a police officer was involved in what appeared to be a case of mistaken identity.

Tudela said he ordered the Criminal Investigation Bureau to investigate the Oct. 18, 2010 incident.

But DPS has yet to identify who was responsible for the victim’s head and ribcage injuries.

DPS has not responded to the inquiries of this reporter.

In her blogsite Unheardnomore!, human rights activist Wendy Doromal raised several questions about the incident.

“What happened to the police officer who allegedly seriously assaulted an innocent Chinese guest worker who was mistakenly thought to be an ice dealer?  Did the U.S. Attorney’s Office take this case? Last I had heard the victim and friends contacted the FBI several times and received no response.  The Department of Public Safety has issued no statement. There has been no statement from anyone in the CNMI government and no follow-up in the press.  I always find it fascinating that such stories just disappear from the press with lingering questions left unanswered.

Accountability?”

On Oct. 18, 2010, authorities raided the As Lito apartment complex where “ice” defendant Junding Qiu and former garment worker Jin Dong Wang were residing.

Police were looking for Qiu, 36, also known as Cho Que, who lived in a room at the back of the complex.

Wang resides on the second floor of the building.

As authorities were conducting and monitoring a controlled buy operation against Qiu, Jin Dong Wang came out of his kitchen and was told by police officers to “stop.”

An officer approached Wang and told him to stay put.

As the victim sat on the ground while holding a bowl of noodles, the police officer walked behind him and hit his head with a handgun, handcuffed him, and kicked him repeatedly in the body.
