Students gather for a cause

SOME 300 public school students gathered on Friday night not only to get to know each other, but also to support the Relay for Life.

Officials from the Public School System, William S. Reyes and Oleai Elementary Schools held the event at GIG Discotheque where 6th graders from various public schools partied for three hours.

Police officers ensured the safety of the students and the smooth flow of traffic in the area.

“This is a way we can introduce students to their counterparts from other schools while expressing support for a worthy cause,” WSR Principal Paz C. Younis told Variety.

It was the third “familiarization” activity for students held at GIG, Younis said.

During last Friday’s activity, students also raised $125 for the American Cancer Society, which will hold the Relay for Life on May 10.

“It is a wonderful thing—no matter how much was raised, the point is they care,” Relay for Life’s Bobbi Grizzard said.

Rosalyn Alepuyo-Sanchez, president of Hopwood Junior High School Student Council, also joined the celebration.

“This is a good exposure for us students because it gives us better ideas about (extra curricular) activities,” Alepuyo-Sanchez said.

On the same day, San Vicente Elementary School held its Young Author’s Book Fair from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Student submitted their writings which were displayed on Friday during Family Reading Night.
