At the Civic Center in the Kilili Beach area, Division of Environmental Quality environment technician Chris Tomokane supervised the 40 students of Marianas High School and 20 personnel of Tan Holdings in the tree planting activity.
Other groups were at Pakpak Beach, Laly 4, Paupau and Tanapag.
Tomokane said they planted mahogany, pink tacoma and plumeria trees.
Edward Arriola Jr., Tan Holdings corporate affairs/business development research head and Saipan Zoning Board member, said they wanted to volunteer as part of their environmental preservation campaign.
Capt. Ernest Torres said MHS students who joined the tree planting activity are members of the JROTC.
He said the program is part of the cadets’ community service requirement.
Torres, who was joined by Sgt 1st Class Juan Lairoti, said they also supervised students about the safety and proper use of garden tools.
The JROTC, he added, has been very active in tree planting activities on Saipan.
When he was still a member of the JROTC, Torres said their group was responsible in planting pine trees 14 years ago in front of MHS which principal Craig Garrison cut down recently.
“It’s good that we leave something behind for the succeeding generations,” he said.
